It's a good job that the habanero chile has a distinctive appearance, otherwise some
people could get a nasty shock. This is one for the confirmed chile-head only.
What Is A Habanero?
Like all chiles habaneros are the fruit of a capsicum - specifically, Capsicum chinense.
They probably originated in Cuba but are now grown in other countries including some of
the warmer US states.
Habaneros have a lantern-like shape with a pointed end. They are usually between 1" and
21/2" long. They start life green but when they ripen they are usually
orange or red.
The habanero chile is justly famous for its strength. With a Scoville rating of up to 300,000 it is some 60 times hotter than
the jalapeno. One variety, the Red Savina Habanero, holds the world record for the hottest
chile with an incredible Scoville rating of up to 570,000 SHU. Now that's a chile with attitude.
Taste
One of the things that makes habaneros so popular is the fact that they aren't just hot. They
also have a fruity, somewhat citrus flavour. This makes them a popular choice for hot
sauces and you can buy specialty habanero chile products.
Note that the habanero is not the same as the Scotch bonnet, although it can be difficult
to tell them apart. They look and taste similar with a similar heat level. However the
Scotch bonnet is a different variety.
